Demise of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) narrates from his forefathers – Two men from Quraish approached Imam Sajjad (a.s.). Imam (a.s.) asked – 'Do you wish that I inform you about the demise of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)? They replied in the affirmative. Imam (a.s.) informed – 'Three days before his demise Jibrail (a.s.) descended at the Holy Prophet's (s.a.w.a.) house. He said, 'Allah has sent me to honour you, to convey His Salutations upon you and to ask about your condition while He knows your condition better (than anyone else).'
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied, 'O Jibrail, I am in sorrow and grief.'
On the third day (day of demise), Jibrail (a.s.) descended along with Malakul Maut and an angel called Ismail who was accompanied by a group of 70,000 angels. Jibrail (a.s.) said, 'Allah has sent me specially to honour you and to ask about your condition while He knows that better than anyone else.'
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied, 'O Jibrail, I am in sorrow and grief.'
At that moment Malakul Maut sought permission to enter the room.
Jibrail (a.s.) informed, 'O Ahmed, this is Malakul Maut. He is seeking your permission to enter the room. He has never sought anyone's permission while entering a house before this day, nor shall he seek such permission after this day.'
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, 'Allow him to enter.' Jibrail (a.s.) permitted Malakul Maut to enter the room.
Malakul Maut stood in front of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and said, 'O Prophet, Allah has sent me in your service. He has commanded me to act as per your bidding. If you permit me I will capture your soul, if you do not permit me I will abstain from it.'
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.): 'O Malakul Maut, will you do exactly as per my bidding?'
Malakul Maut: 'I am at your service to do exactly as ordered.'
Jibrail (a.s.): 'O Ahmad, Allah is eager to meet you.'
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.): 'O Malakul Maut, do what you have been commanded to do (by Allah).
Jibrail (a.s.): 'This is the last time I have set my foot on the earth and my desire was only to meet you.'
Then the Holy Prophet's (s.a.w.a.) soul was captured. Soon a man entered to express his condolences on the demise. The onlookers were able to hear his voice, but they could not see his person. That man said – May salutations, divine mercy and blessings be upon you.
Every soul shall taste of death, and you shall only be paid fully your reward on the resurrection day (Surah Ale Imran (3): 185)
'Certainly every tribulation and comfort is temporary and will soon pass. Then in Allah place all your trust and hope. Surely the one in the greatest difficulty is he who is deprived of reward. May peace, divine mercy and salutations be upon you.'
Imam Ali b. Abi Talib (a.s.) (who was present in that assembly) informed: 'Do you know who is this person? He is Khizr.'
