Earth, sun and moon align for new Iran sanctions

As the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency convened in Vienna on Monday, a perfect storm of propaganda formed over Iran and its controversial nuclear program.

The chief UN nuclear inspector, Mohamed ElBaradei, questioned Iran's cooperation with the agency and demanded that the country clear up US allegations that Iran pursues nuclear weapons development.

Iran does not possess an atomic bomb. It says it would have no practical use for one. The West, however, insists the country intends to acquire a nuclear arsenal.

The foreign ministers of the P5+1 (China, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and the US), which has been trying to find a diplomatic solution to the issue, met on Friday and failed to agree on how to deal with Iran.

While the relations between Moscow and Washington have gone sour, Russia - a veto-wielding member of the United Nations Security Council - says it will not allow a new round of United Nations sanctions against Iran.

The Kremlin's firm stance has sparked an outcry in the West, where governments are saying that US-Russia ties should not eclipse international efforts to tackle the Iranian program.

ElBaradei's Monday remarks, meanwhile, came as an exceptional gift for echelons in the White House.

ElBaradei told the IAEA's 35-member Board that Iran should provide 'substantive information in support of its statements and access to relevant documentations and individuals,' for the agency to be able to guarantee the absence of secret nuclear activities in Iran.

He says that instead of simply dismissing the allegations as 'forged' and 'fabricated', Tehran should clarify 'the extent to which the documentation is factually correct and where, as it asserts, such information may have been fabricated or relates to non-nuclear purposes'.

That is exactly what President Bush needs to unite the public against a Russia that is facing a barrage of criticism over the support it extended to South Ossetia in the Georgian conflict.

If Russia continues to block new UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, it can be accused of inadvertently helping Iran acquire a nuclear bomb.

Now, what exactly is happening that Iran is once again threatened with punitive measures?

Basically, "Iran is accused of not proving it is not doing something it has been accused of doing".

Washington claims that thanks to a random laptop its agents have stumbled upon, there is evidence indicating that Iranian scientists have devised schemes to modify a missile, allowing it to carry a nuclear warhead.

The US, however, has refused to provide the IAEA and Iran with the original documents - which can indicate their origin and whether they are fabricated.

"How come we can question a country without giving authentic documents? A member state is accused by another member state, but that member state has not been given any documents or evidence," Iran's envoy to the IAEA, Ali-Asghar Soltaniyeh, asked Monday.

The revelation about the super-secret laptop came after sixteen US intelligence agencies conceded 'with high confidence' in December 2007 that Iran had stopped working on its alleged nuclear weapon projects.

The 'Manhattan Project-type files' just so happen not to bear any 'confidential' or 'top secret' seal. What this means is that according to Washington, the Iranians thought no one would ever stumble upon their super secretive laptop!

Nonetheless, time is ripe for the US to exploit its seat at the UN Security Council and push for a fourth round of economic sanctions against Iran.

What is the most interesting part of the story? While Washington, Tel Aviv and their European allies advance their agenda to isolate Iran and demonize the country to gain international support for a new war in the oil-rich Middle East, Tehran only demands its inalienable rights.

Iran, a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), has no legal obligation to suspend uranium enrichment at the demand of anyone.

US Vice President Dick Cheney, meanwhile, is running out of time to pull the trigger on operation 'bomb Iran'.
